两者最明显的区别在外形上。蜡梅叶片对生生长，梅花叶片则是互生。蜡梅花瓣质地厚实、蜡质光泽明显，花色以黄为主；梅花花瓣薄而柔润，花色丰富，有粉、白、红等。蜡梅幼枝四方形、老枝近圆柱形，整体枝条挺拔；梅花小枝为绿色、常弯曲，树干树皮浅灰色或带绿色，平滑。
